The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is a new expansion set to bring Geralt of Rivia back in 2027. In a hands-on preview, Xbox Wire says the adventure moves the witcher to Letten, Dandelion’s homeland, where an apparently peaceful region hides a darker mystery.

The update is being co-developed by CD PROJEKT RED and Fool’s Theory. It is separate from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, the free Xbox Series X|S upgrade due September 29, 2026 for owners of the original game.

What the Songs of the Past preview reveals

Xbox Wire’s preview describes an early look at roughly 45 minutes of the expansion. The story sends Geralt alongside Dandelion to investigate a fractured aristocratic family and the threat connected to the Garden of Thorns. That framing suggests a more personal mystery than a continent-spanning crisis, while still giving Geralt a new region to explore.

Letten draws on English and Polish rural settings, according to the preview. The early material presents it as a bright, prosperous place before the story begins exposing the danger beneath it. Players should treat those details as a preview of work in progress, not a full breakdown of the expansion’s quests or final structure.

Geralt gets a chain weapon and new mutagens

Combat is getting new options in The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past. The preview highlights a hooked chain that Geralt can use at range to pull enemies closer, creating quicker melee opportunities. It also points to new mutagens and previously unseen monsters.

That is a meaningful change for a game built around choosing the right tools for a fight. The chain could add a crowd-control option without replacing the swords, Signs, potions and preparation that define Geralt’s combat. Xbox Wire has not published a full skill tree or complete enemy list, so the exact scope remains to be confirmed.

How it connects to the Remastered release

The expansion is scheduled for 2027 on Xbox Series X|S. Before then, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered arrives September 29, 2026 as a free upgrade for existing owners on Xbox Series X|S. Xbox says the remaster will update visual quality, performance, progression and photo mode, while also including Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for players who own only the base game.

Songs of the Past is expected to benefit from those remastered foundations, but it is a separate upcoming release. The distinction matters for anyone deciding whether to return in September or wait for Geralt’s next story.

What is still unconfirmed

The preview establishes the setting, the mystery and some of the combat additions, but it does not set a more precise 2027 launch date, announce pricing or list every platform beyond Xbox Series X|S. It also does not give a full map size, quest count or detailed progression breakdown. Those are practical questions for players, so it is better to treat them as unconfirmed than infer them from an early showing.

Players can wishlist the expansion, according to Xbox’s store listing. The September remaster and the 2027 expansion should not be treated as one release: the first is a confirmed free upgrade for eligible Xbox owners, while the second is a separate future game add-on. What to watch next

CD PROJEKT RED and Xbox are likely to share further details closer to release. For now, the strongest confirmed takeaway is simple: The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past returns Geralt to a new corner of the Continent, with Dandelion at the center of a new case and the chain as a notable new combat tool.
