Google Assistant Mobile Shutdown Starts September 4

Google Assistant’s exit from mobile devices now has a date. The Verge reports that Google has started notifying customers that it will begin removing access to Assistant on September 4, 2026. The company expects the rollout to take several weeks.

The notice narrows the change to mobile devices and accessories that pair with them. It says that, once the transition reaches a user, Google Assistant will no longer be available on their phone, tablet or paired device, and they will not be able to switch back. Gemini will become the Google-provided assistant on eligible Android devices in regions where it is available.

What changes on September 4

The reported notice lists phones and tablets first, then accessories tied to those devices. That includes Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and vehicles using Android Auto projected from a phone. Saying “Hey Google” or long-pressing the power button is expected to bring up Gemini instead of the previous Assistant after the change reaches an eligible device.

One important exception is in-car software that runs independently of a phone. The notice says Google Assistant will continue beyond September 4 in vehicles with Google built-in. That is different from Android Auto projection, where the phone supplies the assistant experience.

Google had already signaled the migration

The date is new, but the direction is not. In a March 2025 post, Google said it would upgrade more mobile users from Assistant to Gemini and that classic Assistant would no longer be accessible on most mobile devices later that year. Google also said the move would eventually extend to tablets, cars and devices connected to phones, including headphones and watches.

That earlier announcement also carried an eligibility caveat: devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum requirements would remain unchanged at that time. The customer notice similarly ties Gemini to supported hardware and regions. In practice, availability can still vary by device, account, language and country, so users should check Google’s current Gemini requirements before assuming every feature will arrive at once.

What is not part of this one deadline

This is not a single switch-off for every product that has ever used Google Assistant. Google has described separate Gemini transitions for smart-home hardware and Google TV, and the customer notice distinguishes mobile accessories from cars with Google built-in. If you rely on Assistant through a Nest speaker, smart display, TV or vehicle system, look for product-specific guidance rather than treating the September 4 mobile schedule as universal.

What Android users should do now

• Try Gemini before the migration reaches your device. Use it for the voice commands and routines you depend on, especially navigation, timers, calling and smart-home control.

• Review your paired devices. A watch, earbuds or Android Auto setup can be affected because it follows the assistant configured on the phone.
• Separate phone-based driving features from Google built-in. The reported notice treats them differently, so do not assume the same timeline applies to both.

The change closes a long transition from Google Assistant to Gemini on mobile. For people who already use Gemini, the September rollout may feel administrative. For those who still rely on Assistant’s older behavior, it is a practical deadline to test the replacement and identify any gaps before the switch becomes permanent.
